The George McLaughlin Award
The tragic events of September 11, 2001 had a profound and lasting effect on America and all freedom loving people. Thousands of America´s best and brightest citizens lost their lives just for being Americans. Many citizens of other countries of the world were also lost on that fateful and horrific day. Thousands of wives, children, mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends of those that perished have had to live with the memories of loved ones lost. Their pain is shared by many people who only knew the victims and their families in passing. The memories of that day will live on throughout history. Let us never forget and let us honor those that lost their lives.
One of the victims of September Eleventh, Two Thousand and One was a man by the name of George McLaughlin. George was a friend of the Tolland Fund and had been a frequent participant in the Tolland Fund´s Bill Schamback Memorial Golf Tournament held each year to raise funds to benefit sports for persons with disabilities. George worked for a company named Carr Futures whose office was located in the World Trade Center in New York City. In order that the memory of George McLaughlin and those that lost their lives will be remembered and honored, the Tolland Fund has established the George McLaughlin Award. The first award was presented at the 2002 tournament to Carols Quiles a world-class athlete with a disability who participates in Track & Field, Skiing and Basketball.
It is the intention of the Tolland Fund to present a significant award to a deserving young athlete with a disability who aspires to become a competitor in the world of sport for persons with disabilities. The Tolland Fund will solicit nominations from prominent coaches and practitioners in the field. The award will be presented each year at the Tolland Fund´s annual golf tournament and will be forever known as the George McLaughlin Award.
